Iron Man

Went to see Iron Man on Saturday after flying in from Indiana (and my brother’s graduation for his 2nd masters degree.)

I thought it was pretty good, myself; Robert Downey, Jr. was perfect in the role, and the changes were minimal (Pepper Potts was a lot more “in” on the goings-on of Tony Stark as Iron Man, for instance.) Still, quite entertaining.

As the film deals with war, weapons manufacture and other like topics I was wondering when people would denounce it because it doesn’t immediately echo their particular political prejudices.

I didn’t have to wait long.

Come on, people! It’s a film about a comic book super hero, not a statement. Get a life.

Ladies and Gentlemen, America’s Mayor… Mr. Rudy Gulliani!

(Yes, it isn’t current news, but I’m sure he’ll do something just as bad real soon now.)

Prohibition Returns!

A very good Reason Magazine article on the rise of the neoprohibitionists. These are the nutsos that, quite simply, want to prevent anyone from drinking at all, regardless of the reason or cost. It’s the next logical step in the War On (some) Drugs. They’ll just expand it to all drugs!

Think of it, instead, as the War On Fun. Because Fun == Bad. Perhaps even evil – who knows?

I wonder how many of the current crop of funkillers^W neoprohibitionists have children with drinking problems. Probably a lot of them, as it seems that Europe doesn’t have these problems (despite junk science from the DOJ that says otherwise.)

Senate and Bush Agree On Terms of Spying Bill

The story can be found here (Washington Post)

With regards to the telcos being granted immunity for assisting in an illegal wiretapping scheme, I hate to say “I told you so”... but I told you so. Apparently it is ok to engage in unconstitutional conduct as long as you get Congress to agree to make it legal retroactively.

It’s a nice racket if you can get into it.

Of course, this implies that Congress can remove said retroactive immunity, too. I’m not holding my breath on that possibility.

No matter what the question is, Rudy says 9/11
