Almost lost my mind there for a moment…
So, I’m getting ready to rip the commercial sendmail package off of my server. It is, for the moment, my mail routing and mailbox management system and – to be honest – it has some interesting features.
But, I no longer work for Sendmail. While I’m sure they are ok with my license, I no longer have a direct line to support and I won’t be getting any new releases. Plus, I work for another company that does e-mail and by using their product in my own production environment I’ll learn more about that product.
So, about 10pm I decided to migrate all of the domains. Almost did it, too – until I realized that any little mistake would keep me up until 1 or 2 in the morning.
Or worse. No thanks.
Actually, I’m quite convinced that the migration tools and systems work fine. What I’m not convinced of is the fact that I’ll think of everything the first time, but by the time I think of every variable I’ll be at a point where there is no falling back to the old system.
I think I’ll do the migration this weekend. I’m not getting paid to do this so I am not going to tempt fate into giving me another late-night horror show migration. I’ve done that and I don’t enjoy it. And I don’t need any more flashbacks to that horrible migration fiasco in Ohio…

it’s good to see that you’re using your noggin.
