Pac Man turns 25

Since one of my former nicknames is “Pac-Man Dude” (thanks, John Bach & company) I thought I’d take the time to mention that Pac-Mac is 25.

Yeah, I know, hiatus. But I’d made some changes to the DB and wanted to make sure posting still worked…

Hiatus

I’m sure that this is a surprise:

This weblog will be on extended Hiatus until the middle of July due to moving, new job, etc.

See you on July 15.

RAID. It hates me.

The server has an 80GB disk in it. Not much, but enough for our purposes.

So, I buy another 80GB disk so that I can put in RAID 1. It’s only software RAID, but it is better than nothing.

But the disks have different size heads and # of cylinders… so they won’t match up block for block. Not possible, even if I don’t use any space on the new disk for swap (who RAIDs swap anyway?).

So, the order of events is as follows:

  1. Waste a day trying to do the impossible.
  2. Get another disk identical to the new disk (can’t find an identical disk to the production one).
  3. Copy all data from production disk to the new disk.
  4. Remove the old production disk; promote the new disk to the production disk.
  5. Make sure everything boots.
  6. Put in the mate to the new production disk; partition, mate via RAID 1, sync.
  7. Test the RAID to make sure it works.
  8. Burn in.
  9. Send to colo facility, hope for the best.

We are on number 2. And we haven’t even touched on migrating the SQL and LDAP databases.

Why, yes, there will be more downtime. Why do you ask?

Why, yes, we did have some downtime…

Getting ready for colocation and we needed some sort of RAID, so today I shoved some disks into this thing.

Now I just have to configure it. Wee!

House: found

Yeah, posting has been non-existant… we’ve been busy.

Last week myself, Pam and the boys went to Northern California to find a house. We left on Saturday, returning on Thursday and we just barely pulled it off; we signed the lease about 5 hours before our flight home. But we did it, and that is what counts.

The house is nice, has large amounts of parking and the lease price was dirt cheap by Bay Area standards.

I don’t want to clutter up the page (well, any more than I have) so please click on More to see a picture.

Ok, sure, the front yard is small (and getting smaller daily), but the rent is SO CHEAP!

And so was this joke.

But, really, we found a place. It’s nice.
